Developed during wartime England at the Shirley Institute, Manchester, Ventile was designed to save the lives of escort Hurricane fighter pilots in the Atlantic and Russian convoys. The ships they flew from were not equipped for landings and so pilots would have to bail out into the icy cold sea, most dying after a few minutes from the exposure. Ventile offered an impenetrable fabric from the freezing winds and icy waters and extended survival times from a few minutes to over 20 minutes. Its impressive qualities are thanks to its super dense and tight weave. Ventile is still used today by RAF pilots and other NATO air forces.
