Combining the 55 birthday of #JoanneCatherall & our on-going campaign celebrating the north, today seemed like the perfect excuse to consider @thehumanleague .
The original formation of the band was created in ‘77, Sheffield. A bit surprising- THL were one of the most fashionable & progressive bands in the world in their heyday (no offence Sheffield). More surprisingly- differing to the band as we now know it to be- it was originally an all-male electro troupe. Computer operators Martyn Ware & Ian Marsh invited flamboyant introvert Phil Oakey, decked in jewels & makeup to experiment with their synth machines in a cutlery warehouse. In a time where the punk of the #Clash & #SexPistols was the genre of choice for the city, their clean & electronic venture was astonishing. John Lydon branded them ‘trendy hippies’, & Bowie labelled them ‘the future of pop music’. As you’d probably suppose from an all-male synth troupe from Sheffield in the 80’s- tensions over the next move with their sound got the better of them. The group disbanded- Wiki cites that ‘the lack of success compared with the success of Gary Numan’s work at that time brought matters to a head’. One half moved on to form Heaven 17, leaving THL composed of solely Phil. With the entire debt of the band, an imposing record deal & a European tour looming two weeks away all to his name- what was he to do? His quest took him to the Crazy Daisy Nightclub of all places, where he caught a glimpse of 2 women dancing. It was here he knew that these women would be the perfect addition to the band’s 2 week tour, & enlisted them instantly, not knowing whether they could sing.

You can imagine the young girls excitement- yet ‘young’ eventually turned out to be the problem. They were 17 & still in school. To Joanne & Susan, they saw an opportunity to get out of school for a few weeks. To Phil, the reality of the situation sunk in, & he realised he would have to speak to the girl’s parents.
It was the evaluation that Phil was too ‘effeminate to be a sexual predator’ that sanctioned the girls to jump aboard the tour. If it were not for this outdated summation of his androgyny, THL would not exist as we know It
