In late August, @anrizzy photographed Pastor Vanessa Brown, left, and Pastor Twanna Gause celebrating their union at the New Vision Full Gospel Baptist Church in East Orange, New Jersey. Bishops Levi Richards and Eugene Gathers both walked Twanna down the aisle — a role she’d initially hoped would be accepted by her father, a Pentecostal minister who lives in Atlanta. But he refused his daughter’s invitation. “My father would not come here because he does not believe in same-sex marriage,” she said. When asked about his absence at the wedding reception, Bishop Richards said simply: “God has a way of honoring us when others won’t.” Both women are pastors of Rivers of Living Water United Church of Christ, which has locations in Newark and New York. They met as choir girls at a church in Jersey City, when Twanna was 16 and Vanessa was 18. Years later, in 2005, Vanessa invited Twanna to give a guest sermon at a church in Harlem where she served as an associate pastor. Soon, for the first time, Twanna began to express her true feelings, and Vanessa began seeing her old friend through “a different set of eyes,” as she put it.
