Ancient times
I was on assignment in Afghanistan, covering the war between the russian invaders and the afghan resistants. Like many old villages in the area, Landikotal is flanked by watchtowers, which in past times were used by sentinels to detect the approach of enemies, and has fortified keeps whose upper rooms were filled with food, to allow every family to live through a siege. The 20th century introduced a new, industrial form of warfare. Air forces with bombers and missiles made these age-old principles of fortification for defense and observation obsolete. People now had to bury themselves in mountain tunnels for protection. In an Afghanistan wounded by years of conflict, men, women and children fled the war and walked towards a little piece of peace.
