Hailey: I’m very interested in what is keeping women from saying yes [to directing]. Unfortunately a lot of it is really minor, it’s about fear of not knowing certain lenses or technical elements. Men seem to feel comfortable learning on the job and women learn through diligence. Being a director is a series of yes or no questions, it’s deciding where everyone is moving. To be at the helm of something is a lot of responsibility and I think for women, the fear of not knowing the answer is sometimes crippling.”

Tavi: “The movie that I did a few years ago was directed by Nicole Holofcener. It was amazing because she’d made so many movies but it was her first one with a studio. It was so relaxed and felt like we were a tiny crew and cast. She had to make all of the decisions and deal with all of those personalities and I think that set a good example for me of how we can learn to be yes or no and black or white about something, but make sure you’re still making what you want to make, and using all your other tools that are maybe less conventional in a director.”
