Today we’re celebrating the legacy of Dr. Stella Kramrisch (1896–1993), one of the 20th century’s most important art historians. Dr. Kramrisch was our curator of Indian Art from 1954 to 1993, as well as a professor at the University of Pennsylvania. Born in Austria, Kramrisch studied in Vienna and traveled to India to teach at a university established by Rabindranath Tagore, India’s renowned poet and the first non-European to win a Nobel Prize in Literature. Among the 1,000 works of art Kramrisch donated to the Museum are seven paintings by Tagore. Many of his paintings depict female faces, all untitled, but this one depicts a similar hairstyle that Stella Kramrisch wore throughout her life.
