I’d photographed two hurricanes before, but this was the first time my family was the victim. I juggled photographing and helping evacuate my mother on Sunday. This is a room in my mother’s house. We were trying to save memorabilia and items that were important to us, and I remembered that my prom dress and some of my other childhood possessions were in the closet. We piled everything on top of the beds right as the water was seeping through the house.
