The photographer Steven Laxton was travelling in Bangkok when he decided to shoot the city’s cabaret theatres. A popular tourist attraction, the venues’ razzle-dazzle performances—featuring extravagant costumes and burlesque-style dances—are known for featuring the transgender women and gender non-conforming men known as kathoey, in Thai. Laxton’s lush, careful portraits draw individuals from beneath the cabaret’s gaudy spectacle, and serve as quiet rebuttals to the gawking caricatures of kathoey elsewhere in Western pop culture.
