Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto // Mountain hare close up – This is an image of a confiding mountain hare that, because of the distinctive beard-like hair that he had beneath his chin he was very originally named ‘Beardie’. I spent a great deal of time with this hare over the 4 weeks that I was in Scotland earlier this year and when I captured this image I was shooting with my 200-400mm lens . One of the many points that I witter on about, ad nauseum, to aspiring wildlife photographers is that ‘you cannot approach wildlife too slowly’. Move in too fast, be too greedy or too desperate and the opportunity will not only be lost but in doing so you will inadvertently break the bond of trust between you and the animal, a trust that will then be that much more difficult to regain. Move in slowly, cautiously and respectfully, all the while paying attention to the subtle cues that the animal will be exhibiting and the trust that you will potentially be afforded can be astonishing. I never set a time frame for an approach, nor do I get so excited by the possibilities that I rush, taking liberties or pushing too hard. Instead I simply let myself be seen, usually sitting down and having a sandwich, take in the view, breathe the air. When the time is right I shuffle a little bit closer and then repeat, sandwich, view, breathe. Granted I do end up eating a lot of sandwiches but enduring up on the hill all day, trudging through deep snow and weighed down with camera equipment makes them much needed calories. Either way I’m not a man in a hurry. Feel free to get in touch with me at [email protected] if you’d like to join me in spending time with these astonishing mammals as I’ll be guiding again, a maximum of two people per day, from January through February 2018 and you too will be able to capture images like this.
