The monumental ambitions that once drove the transformation of Ostend — from a modest Belgian fishing port into one of Europe’s grandest seaside resorts — appear first on its outskirts. The huge railway viaducts leading into the town along the industrial harbor are bordered by elegant granite balustrades and huge carved balls of stone. The station itself is a “bombastically beautiful 1913 building,” writes Alexander Lobrano for @nytimestravel. All together, they suggest that you’ve reached a splendid place conjured up by a royal house seeking a public appearance of power and permanence. (The Belgian throne was created in 1831.) #Ostend, which is situated on the North Sea, is not Versailles. Today, it’s a place both bawdy and fancy. Alexander went there to explore its connection to the painter James Ensor, who spent his life there. The painter was deeply nourished by the sea. “I was guided by a secret instinct, a feeling for the atmosphere of the seacoast, which I had imbibed with the breeze, inhaled with the pearly mists, soaked up in the waves, heard in the wind,” Ensor wrote to a friend. @alex_cretey_systermans took this photo of one of Ostend’s broad beaches.
