Astronaut and former US Senator John Glenn was born on this day in Cambridge Ohio, July 18, 1921. He was the first American to orbit the Earth among his many accomplishments before he died in 2016. He is pictured here on the cover of LIFE magazine in 1962. The essay featured photos from Glenns' personal collection. The story begins with "A look homeward.
