Hazel Kingsbury signed on as a staff photographer for the Red Cross in 1945, and traveled to France to document relief efforts at the end of World War II. In addition to her work for the Red Cross, Kingsbury made her own personal photographs, such as this bombed church. These images offer a complex picture of France emerging from war, and her choice of subject matter informed the pictures of France her husband Paul Strand would later make in the 1950s.
