Did you know? The name “Singapore” originated from the Sanskrit word “Siṃhapura”, literally translated as the city of lion. Legend has it that a Srivijayan prince saw an animal he believed to be a lion on an island. He deemed it a good omen and so built a city on the island, the name of which was Siṃhapura and eventually became Singapore we know today. However, lion is not a native animal of Singapore, and there has never been one on the island. So the animal that the prince saw was probably a tiger or even a tapir, but the name "the City of Lion" lives on and is used until this day.
