Today we celebrate the birthday of #ChuckClose, who was born #onthisday in 1940. Working from black-and-white Polaroid photographs that he takes himself, Close covers them with a grid pattern and transposes the images onto monumental canvases. When viewed up close, the grid pattern appears like nothing more than an abstract arrangement of colors and shapes, but when seen from far away, the individual grids coalesce into grand and cohesive portrait, such as in this portrait of Paul.
