Independence Day is a remembrance of the Continental Congress' meeting in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 4, 1776 to approve the final wording of the Declaration of Independence. Upon the signing of The Declaration, the 13 original colonies declared their freedom from the tyranny and corruption of Britain. Mind you, this was during a time of slavery, when First Nations people were being forcibly removed as their lands were stolen and women had very few rights. Unfortunately today we still see tyranny and corruption and lack of freedom for many on these same lands. Patriotism to me is the ability to recognize where the lofty ideals of freedom are working and to continue to fight daily to fix the systemic injustices and corruption we still see, with passion, optimism and tenacity. Remembering with gratitude the parts that work and fighting like hell to fix what doesn’t. That's love. I hope wherever you are, you take time to be with family and friends you care about and celebrate the union you have with them, so that we might all be stronger to work daily for a “more perfect” one.
