The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona is a chronograph and a chronometer at the same time. The two words are commonly mistaken. A chronograph is a watch featuring an additional mechanism whose hands can be started, stopped and returned to zero on demand to measure a duration. A chronometer, on the other hand, is a high-precision watch certified by an official body, such as COSC in Switzerland (Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres). As for “Cosmograph”, this singular name invented by Rolex was used to mark out its new chronograph when it was launched in 1963.
