Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Mallard ducklings – I must confess to feeling extremely lucky to live in the part of the UK that I do. Whilst we might not have many of the exotic and rarer species that can be found north of the border in Scotland the countryside near my home in Derbyshire does sometimes feel like it is filled with an abundance of wildlife. Even mundane and often overlooked species such as the humble mallard offer a vast wealth of photographic opportunities and it would be difficult to find a more accessible or approachable subject. Looking through my files of mallards this morning I have photographed them in all different kinds of light, from lots of different perspectives and showing a wide range of behaviour. Add in the different types of weather like rain and snow, plus the contrasting males and females and the various stages of the ducklings growth and it’s easy to see how, just skimming the surface as I have done with them, can still produce a vast array of images. This image was captured at one of my favourite locations where I can shoot comfortably from water level whilst sitting warm and dry on a chair, my camera supported on a tripod. Contrast that with my good friend @kevmorgans who has to actually lie in the water to shoot at water level ?, often wrecks his camera bodies in the process and usually ends up with a sore neck afterwards and I count myself very lucky to have stumbled upon such a location. The rich, verdant green of the water is the colour of distant trees reflected in the water whilst the lead duckling, stretching his tiny wings, anchors the image and gives it that important extra detail of interest.
