Photo by @amivitale for @ナショナルジオグラフィック. Wildlife keepers Leruk, Mike and Naomi work together to get the herd of orphaned elephants fed at Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e) in Northern Kenya. The rescued elephants eat a special formula every three hours around the clock. Reteti lies within a 975,000-acre swath of thorny scrubland in northern Kenya known as the Namunyak Wildlife Conservation Trust—part of the ancestral homeland of the Samburu people. The sanctuary’s more than 20 elephant keepers are Samburus, all intent on returning their charges, under a dozen as of now, to the wild.
