One of the great privileges of working on #potc5 was to see how some of the best actors in the world prepare for a role. I remember our first meeting with Geoffrey Rush. It was over dinner and I thought it was going to be a nice get-to-know-each-other. After 30 seconds he pulls out his script - which is fat with scribbles and notes - and starts talking about his character's motivation. Five hours later we're the only ones left in the restaurant, and we're still working on his character's motivation. And even though this is a character he’s played for 15 years, he keeps digging every day through the shoot and through ADR. And I realize why Captain Hector Barbossa and all of the other characters he’s portrayed in countless movies and plays are so good: because he knows that no one cares about his character as much as he does and he relentlessly carries that responsibility.
