"As a general matter, Rachel Comey doesn’t mess with vintage. It’s not that she never takes a retro cue; of course she does. But her habit is to submerge those references so deep below the surface of her own idiosyncratic aesthetic that they are impossible to recognize. This collection was different: A visit to the Vogue Patterns archives spurred Comey to rip off some Depression-era silhouettes, and in this case the inspiration was entirely legible, because Comey’s practice, in the case of several looks, was to lift the vintage patterns whole and then cut off a sleeve or twist the shape around.
