Photo by @FransLanting // Tuataras today look practically the same as they did 240 million years ago and are often called living fossils. These slow-growing dragons can live up to a century, once they emerge from eggs that take up to 15 months to hatch. They survive on a few islands off New Zealand, and one evening on a tiny islet I created this portrait. Sharp side-lighting from a strobe made the tuatara look as immutable as the rock itself, a creature frozen in time.
