Photo by @edkashi/@viiphoto. In the Ogoniland village of Kpean, an oil well head that had been leaking for weeks turned into a raging inferno. The local youths kept watch, waiting for Shell to come and put the fire out. This #environmental disaster for the local people effects their crops, water and air. Even though Shell has not been allowed to pump oil from its 125 wells in Ogoniland since 1993, they still have wells that are leaking and often unattended or maintained. Earlier this year, a new case on behalf of communities hit by oil spills was brought to the high court in the UK in the hopes that they would set an important precedent on jurisdiction for future cases to be brought against UK-based corporations for their actions abroad. One claim comes from 40,000 people in the Ogale community in Ogoniland. King Okpabi, the leader of this community, said: “Royal Dutch Shell makes billions of dollars of profit each year from Nigerian oil, but our communities which host its infrastructure have been left environmentally devastated.” The court decided the claims should be handled within Nigerian courts.
