17-year-old Madalena Francisco Jorge at school in Tete, #Mozambique. Madalena told the photographer @danirodriguesphoto that she feels discriminated against by other students, who often call her “money” because of the value of her body parts. Madalena has #albinism. In Mozambique, albinos can be worth as much as $75,000. Superstition there and in nearby countries like Malawi and Tanzania says that if you carry a piece of albinism with you — a bone, perhaps, or a piece of skin — you’ll have good luck. Since the end of 2014, dozens of albinos in Mozambique have been kidnapped or murdered, often by family members. Many of the people @danirodriguesphoto interviewed and photographed didn’t believe he was a journalist when they first met. “They thought I wanted to kidnap and sell them,” he writes in #NYTOpinion.
