"I was looking at a lot of stock photography, specifically medical and business pictures, ‘closing the deal’ kind of stuff. I was playing around with making them naked and just creepy awful; I decided to make one of them God or Jesus. They’re like these sick meditations, these stock images—they are just soul-killing to look at. They’re always packed with such ham-fisted attempts to present everyone goofing around together with this ostentatious lack of attention to their different races and ages and so on. They’re interesting to play around with, to try to make them work as paintings, because the images are so composed. The photographers have already had to simplify it so much and get it exactly right, so in a way they’re perfect. But only the ones from 20 years ago. I hate the ones from right now—they definitely have to age in the bottle before they’re ready to drink." —John Currin
