Currently the subject of a major #retrospective at @whitechapelgallery, ‘the godfather of #PopArt’ Eduardo #Paolozzi’s irreverent #collages, #sculptures and #prints challenged artistic convention and made him one of Britain’s most influential post-war artists. Born in #Scotland to #Italian parents, Paolozzi moved to #Paris in the summer of 1947 to discover a city only just beginning to recover from the occupation and destruction of WWII - brimming with artists, poets and designers. Along with his friend, the artist William #Turnbull, he got to know the leading artists of the day including Fernand #Lger, Georges #Braques, Jean #Arp, #Brancusi and Alberto #Giacometti. He was profoundly impacted by Giacometti, who inspected this very #sculpture in person in the studio. Titled Paris Bird, this undeniably #machinist sculpture pays homage to the #Surrealist and #Dada artists that Paolozzi had got to know.
