#LeonardoDaVinci passed away on this day, 2 May 1519, at age 67. He died in France after he entered service for King Francis I of France. #Leonardo was given a manor house near the king's residence. 'St. John the Baptist' is believed to be his final painting. The artwork depicts St. John the Baptist smiling in an enigmatic way that reminds us of #Leonardo's Mona Lisa.
The subject his pointing up toward heaven with his right hand. This gesture suggests the importance of salvation through baptism that John the Baptist represents.
