@david_august_trimble first held the @redhookcrit in March 2008 on the sleepy streets of Red Hook, Brooklyn, with about 40 cyclists on bikes intended for a velodrome. It was informal and unsanctioned, with little vision for the future. “The first year it was just, ‘how do I make a race that’s super fun and gets people to come to my birthday party?’” he said. But David, who has a background in auto racing, eventually turned his attention toward making the race a yearly event — “the Formula 1 of bike racing,” he said. On Saturday night, a warm breeze carried his voice from the booming loudspeakers across the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal as he counted down the start for 100 riders in the 10th Red Hook Criterium, now a revered #fixedgear bike race known as the #RedHookCrit. What began as an underground night race among friends now attracts some of the world’s top cyclists. “The high level athletes were national track champions, now they’re gold medalists,” @david_august_trimble told @nytimessports.
