Most Roman mosaics were made of small cubes (called tesserae) of stone or glass. Schools of mosaicists flourished in North Africa from the 2nd to the 5th century AD. They created a distinctive African style which vividly reflected the tastes and interest of their wealthy patrons. Made around AD 200–225, this mosaic was excavated in a villa in Utica, Tunisia. The city was an important settlement on the African coast – this intricate work shows men hunting in marshlands with nets, catching a variety of animals.
