In 1982, when the Burlington Center Mall opened in Burlington, New Jersey, it meant that shoppers didn’t have to travel to downtown Trenton or Philadelphia to purchase the latest fashions, children’s high chairs or gas-powered lawn mowers. 35 years later, the building still stands, but the mall is barely there — its lights are on, its escalators keep moving, but its purpose in life has gone. As the online experience rapidly changes our relationship with shopping, “zombie malls” like this one are increasingly dotting the suburban landscape. @jtaggfoto photographed an empty table and chairs at the food court at the Burlington Center Mall. The shopping center once had more than 100 tenants; today, it’s down to 20. Visit the link in our profile to see more of what America’s retail transformation looks like, in photos by @jtaggfoto.
