This photo of the Florida Everglades proves that there’s more to the national park than swamps and gators (though there are plenty of those there, too). For this image, photographer Mac Stone, a native Floridian, is both the person behind the camera and the one lying in the hammock. He used an intervalometer to take a photo every 32 seconds throughout the night, staying awake the entire time. He hopes his photographs will show people another side to the Everglades – one that isn’t just a wasteland, but a landscape deserving of protection and pride. “If we can heal this system, it’s going to become an icon for wetland restoration all over the world,” Mac says. “It’s up to us to decide which legacy we want to attach our flag to.” To see more of his images, follow him at @macstonephoto and visit go.ted.com/everglades
