While Amelia Earhart is widely recognized as leader in women’s aviation, she was not alone as a pioneering pilot. #AmeliaEarhart was the first woman to fly solo nonstop across the Atlantic. In 1937, she vanished mysteriously over the Pacific during her attempted around-the-world flight.

In 1929, Gladys O’Donnell entered the first Women’s Air Derby with reportedly only 40 hours of solo flying time and placed second. The following year she would place first in the California-to-Ohio race.

Viola Gentry set the first non-refueling endurance record for women in 1928 when she flew for 8 hours, 6 six minutes and 37 seconds. She earned the nickname the “flying waitress” at her day job in a North Carolina restaurant.

Florence Lowe “Pancho” Barnes founded the first movie stunt pilots’ union. She broke #Earhart’s speed record in 1930.

Phoebe Omlie was the first woman to receive a license as an airplane mechanic and transport pilot, and set several world records, including the highest altitude parachute jump by a woman in 1928.

The following year, Louise McPhetridge Thaden would become the first pilot to hold the women’s altitude, endurance and speed records in light planes simultaneously.
