For Micheline. RIP

Micheline Zacharov worked with me, in the studio, for ten years and I learnt so much from her; she enhanced my expression immeasurably. She taught me how to make shapes.
I was young and wanted to make shows. I'd give her a sketch of something insane and she'd tell me how we could make it. I'd start and she'd say "Great, OK- you're slow, but it's OK." Micheline was unique and quite particular - an old-school hat designer- and her love for the craft touched me deeply. I could handle her and she could handle me.
Both Micheline and Shirley Hex, who taught me at the Royal College of Art, are the unsung heroes of hat design.
