The bark of these remarkable trees is quite fire retardant, encasing the tree with an armor as thick as 3 feet which protects the heartwood interior. These trees are among the oldest and the tallest in the world, endemic to the Sierra Mountains of California. They are currently faced with a new threat, draught and rising heat index. Some are beginning to show signs of stress, brought on from the affects of #climateChange.
