Vote for your fave in the comments – this #BrooksBracket matchup in the "Vintage Icons" region is a battle between golden oldies: No. 1 Sack Suit vs. Shetland Sweater.
How did the famed Sack Suit come to be? Unable to afford two-button jackets when three-button jackets become passé at the turn of the 19th century, college students press back the lapels of their old jackets; in 1901, we adopted the trend into our permanent line and called it “The Number One.” With its trim, natural shoulder, undarted front, and non-functional third button, the Number One “Sack” dominates American business attire for the first 60 years of the 20th century.
Just a few years later, in 1904, we brought to America traditional sweaters made in private homes on Scotland's Shetland Islands. Upon the introduction of a wider variety of colors in 1938, this sweater would become a sensation among college-aged women and – like the pink shirt – help spur our entrance into the women’s business.
