Violet Oakley was the first American woman to receive a public #mural commission—to decorate Pennsylvania’s state capitol building in Harrisburg. Along with Jessie Willcox Smith and Elizabeth Shippen Green, Oakley was part of a group of professional women artists in Philadelphia known as the “Red Rose Girls.” Their work is featured in #AmericanWatercolor, and in a new installation in the our Library. #WomensHistoryMonth #5womenartists “Study for ‘Divine Law,’” c. 1917, by Violet Oakley
