I used very cheap oil paint that I rubbed into Strathmore Bristol smooth paper. I started with Q-tips to apply the oil in smaller areas and then rubbed it out with paper towels. I did this until the pigment wouldn't come up when I touched the paper. You can also go in with a kneaded eraser to pick up excess oil or to erase out highlights. After everything had a nice oil rub base I went in with colored pencils the next day for details! The benefits of using an oil rub base is a workable toned surface, ability to erase out highlights and being able to mix your own base colors. I'll have to do a full tutorial on YouTube!
