Photograph by @paulnicklen for @natgeo // Against the backdrop of Antarctica’s ice covered mountains, a humpback whale hangs its tail high in the air before descending back into the feeding frenzy on krill. All large whale species, including the blue whale were completely wiped out around Antarctica from commercial hunting. The blue whale has been the slowest to show any signs of recovery however, globally the humpback whale seems to be doing the best. That does not mean that they are out of the woods. We found a humpback whale on this expedition that appeared to have been killed by a ship strike. Please #followme on @paulnicklen to see this image. Gerlache strait and Bransfield Strait are key feeding and migratory corridors for many species of whales and seals. On our ship navigation system, we watched as large passenger ships went through these sensitive areas at over 19 knots. While feeding and sleeping, many whales are killed each year from ship strikes. Ship traffic and speeds need to be controlled in these critical areas. With @sea_legacy and @natgeopristineseas. @ladzinski is giving a talk at @natgeo HQ tonight on his work which will include a summary of this expedition. You can follow along on National Geographic’s facebook feed this evening.
