The softness of these colors disguises the harshness of the terrain, which receives little rainfall and where the average elevation averages 12,300 feet over an area exceeding 100,000 square miles (also including large swaths of Chile and Bolivia.). I shot this image on the slopes of 22,109-foot Volcan Lllullaillaco (pronounced “You-yie-YA-ko,”) the world’s second loftiest volcano and third highest peak in South America, where @ナショナルジオグラフィック archaelogist Johan Reinhart would soon find the world's highest Inca mummies. Sadly, I did not witness that exciting event because shortly after taking this picture I went unconscious from high altitude sickness and nearly perished while trying to descend back to thicker air. #volcano #landscape #Lllullaillaco
