When a knock at the door can tear a family apart, it’s best to be prepared. At least that’s how Esmeralda Mosso sees it. Esmeralda, an undocumented immigrant, moved to the U.S. 12 years ago from Guerrero State in Mexico. @heislerphoto photographed Esmeralda on Monday with her 3-month-old daughter, who’s an American citizen. Last week, Esmeralda, 38, went to the Bureau of Vital Statistics in Lower Manhattan to get official copies of her kids’ birth certificates. She needed them for passports and so that they could apply for dual citizenship with Mexico. And Esmeralda wasn’t alone: For several days last week, the line stretched out the door and around the block. About 3.3 million people live in the U.S. illegally with at least one child who’s an American citizen. While Esmeralda’s 5-year-old also has citizenship, her 15-year-old doesn’t. “She doesn’t want to go,” said, Esmeralda, who also wants to stay in New York. But, she said, “I’m prepared to go, but with my children,” she said. “Without them, I’m not going. Even if they use a crane, I’m not going without them.”
