Chien-Shiung Wu
1912-1997
Known as the “First Lady of Physics,” Wu discovered how to enrich uranium and disproved the law “conservation of parity,” which theorized that mirror image systems like atoms must behave identically. She is believed to be the only Chinese person, man or woman, to have worked on the Manhattan Project. Later, two men who worked with her, Tsung-Dao Lee and Chen Ning Yang, received the Nobel Prize, while Wu was excluded.
