八坂庚申堂ではあちこちで写真のようなカラフルな「くくり猿」があちこちにくくりつけられています。これはその名の通り、手足をくくり付けられた猿の姿を模したものです。八坂庚申堂はその名前からも猿に縁のある寺院ですが、ここでは欲のままに行動する猿を人間の中にある欲望にたとえて、これが動かないようにされた姿を表しているそうです。多くの参拝者が自分の欲望を抑えて願いが叶うように、戒めとしてこのカラフルな「くくり猿」をくくりつけていくのです。

There are many colorful kukuri-saru (monkeys) at Yasakakousinndou. As the name indicates,monkeys’ hand and foot are tied up . The meaning of koushinndo has connection with monkey. These "animal" monkeys who behave based on natural instincts and do all what he want, are often compared to human's side of desire. It is said that worshipers must curb their desires to make their wishes come true, so they place their own monkey at the temple.
