Happy #ValentinesDay to the lovers out there ❤️ This image depicts Sappho and Erinna, the ancient Greek poets who were associated with the island of Lesbos, giving us the word ‘lesbian’. The artist, Simeon Solomon, was attracted to men at a time when male homosexuality was illegal. This same-sex female couple may be a covert way of referring to his own desires.
