Baseball scouts are quick to point out that places with year-round warm weather — the Dominican Republic, Florida, Southern California and Texas — are hotbeds for @MLB prospects. But that doesn’t discourage young players in the dead of the New Jersey winter, where the fields of dreams are industrial hangars with fluorescent lighting, artificial turf and mesh netting to protect the windows. In a backyard shed in Forked River, New Jersey, Mark Leiter – who pitched for 11 years in the majors – demonstrates the proper grip for a changeup in private pitching lessons. 13-year-old Jaden Grillo attends winter clinics and has trained with Mark. “We might not have the weather, but we have other resources,” Jaden said. “If you want to do it, you will, and you can.” @ryanchristopherjones took this photo of Mark on his “commute” to work in the backyard.
