Bill Viola Story: Estate 1957
In vacanza in montagna con la famiglia, il piccolo Bill si tuffa in un lago e sta per annegare. Dirà in seguito: «fui così incantato dalla bellezza di ciò che vidi sotto, che solo dopo che mio zio mi salvò mi potei spaventare da morire. Da allora l’acqua è centrale nel mio mondo. È la vita ma può anche distruggerla, mi aiuta a dire: “vai oltre la superficie delle cose, punta alla loro anima”». Si riferisce a quell’incidente acquatico l’autoritratto Self Portrait, Submerged (Firenze, @uffizigalleries).

Holidaying with the family in the mountains, six-year-old Bill dives into a lake and narrowly escapes drowning. Years later he explains: “I was so enchanted by the beauty of what I saw below the surface that I was only frightened to death after my uncle rescued me. Water has played a key role in my world ever since then. It is life, but it can also destroy life; it prompts me to say: ‘go below the surface of things, aim for their soul’.” His Self Portrait, Submerged (Florence, Gallerie degli Uffizi) refers to this incident.
