Photo by @nickcobbing // This ringed seal had just jumped off an ice floe when I made this picture in Greenland. Like all seals this species is completely at home in the water, but they are highly dependent on sea ice too. They use the ice to protect and raise their young. Climate change is impacting all ice associated species by accelerating the melting of the sea ice which covers the Arctic Ocean. Satellite records show a sharp decline in the ice surface area and thickness. Researchers tell me that although some species will be winners and some will adapt, those creatures that depend directly on sea ice will have few options for survival.
