#tbt to back in the day when Dizzy Gillespie was working at Snookie’s, the club on 52nd street in NY, when a comedian accidentally sat on Dizzy’s trumpet & bent the bell upwards...But Dizzy liked the sound of it, so that became the style. I loved that thing so much & he knew it...So one day, after I was back home from being the director & arranger for his Goodwill Tour Big Band, my bell rang at 55 & W. 92nd...There was no one there except a bag, & inside of it was this trumpet (top). Dizzy had signed his Martin trumpet over to me with the bent bell, & it had “oo bop she bam” on the logo with my name engraved on it. I was in Heaven!! Then, my mentor & brother, Clark Terry, later got me the other two in the middle from Selmer in Paris. And the one on the bottom is a flute that Cannonball Adderley (my daughter Kidada’s godfather) left for her. Absolutely beautiful people!!...Man, I miss Dizzy, Clark, & Cannonball more than much & I’m so grateful to have these pieces of their lives still with me.
