At professional squash tournaments, players get tips and advice from a trusted source during 2-minute breaks between games. That source is usually a coach or another pro. But there are exceptions. The best player in the world today is a rangy 25-year-old Egyptian named Mohamed El Shorbagy (@moelshorbagy), aka the Beast of Alexandria. Between games his counsel of choice is a woman of a certain age, wearing an expression of deep concern and a hijab. That’s his mom, Basma El Shorbagy — and she’s never played squash in her life. “I’m not the easiest person to talk to between games,” @moelshorbagy said. “But she understands me better than anyone else in the world. She knows how to motivate me.” Asked what exactly she tells her son between games, Basma initially demurred with a giggle. “It’s my secret!” she said. @hlswift photographed @moelshorbagy competing in the the Tournament of Champions at Grand Central Station on Thursday.
