In Guatemala nearly a quarter of women between the ages of 20 and 24 were married before the age of 18. Every two seconds a girl is married globally, curtailing her education and causing greater exposure to domestic abuse, HIV infection, and life-threatening and even fatal complications from pregnancy and childbirth. The phenomenon spans across ethnic and religious boundaries, cultures and classes, perpetuating a cycle of poverty, both for her and her community.
