#BileBeans started appearing in newspaper advertising in the 1890s…. initially as a tonic for stomach upset but then as a cure-all. The beans were said to contain the extract of a mysterious vegetable discovered by the Australian chemist Charles Forde.⠀

In 1905 it was found that the whole thing was a fraud – there was no secret ingredient and Charles Forde was fictitious. However, the beans continued to be popular until the 1980s. #MAAScollection #Recollect #HealthandMedicine
