Kabuki is a traditional Japanese theater form, which is listed as part of UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Kabuki originated in the 17th century, within the Edo period when a woman called “Okuni of Izumo” performed a Buddhist dance in Kyoto. Originally, both men and women acted in Kabuki. However, because of the prevailing moral order, eventually only male actors were allowed to perform the plays. So these days women's roles are played by male actors, called onnagata. Other major male roles are played in a rough style, known as aragoto, or a soft style, wagoto, among other ways.
